The Association of Law Students of the Philippines, Inc. (ALSP) is a national federation of more than sixty law student governments whose members are bona fide law students from all over the country. ALSP is officially recognized by the Supreme Court of the Philippines as the student counterpart of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP). Furthermore, it is considered as a legitimate national organization by the President of the Republic of the Philippines through the National Youth Commission.
As the premier law students’ organization in the country, ALSP aims to contribute to the improvement of legal education in the Philippines by providing venues for academic cooperation and coordination to instill a sense of social awareness and public responsibility among its members, particularly in the advocacy of social justice and recreational development and to promote better understanding, goodwill, and cooperation with law students from other countries on matters of mutual concern and benefit.
Representation to ALSP is facilitated by law student governments/councils of various law schools, whose delegates congregate as the National Assembly in the annual National Convention. It is also during the National Convention that certain law students are elected as officers in different regional and national positions for the administration of the Association.
Over the past few decades, ALSP has tremendously grown and its influence among Filipino law students continues to increase. With a 5,000-strong organization comprising students and alumni, ALSP is the biggest conglomeration of law students in the Philippines. It also takes pride as one of the founding members of the Asian Law Students’ Association and one of the leading local chapters in Southeast Asia.
Executive Summary
ALSP is proud to present this year’s iteration of the 2017 Annual National Convention in the Queen City of the South, Cebu City, with the theme: “Leveraging Legal Education Innovation through Partnerships and Collaboration in the Philippines.”
For the past 28 years, ALSP has undergone vast changes and continues to remain steadfast in its commitment to help produce not only strong-willed and principled lawyers but also the best legal minds in the country.
The Annual National Convention is attended by more than 150 law students from different law schools from Luzon, National Capital Region, Visayas, and Mindanao. It is the largest law student convention in the Philippines.
As one of the ALSP’s signature events, it is in the National Convention that members, participants and the country’s keenest and finest law students are brought together to discuss the latest developments in key legal topics and to expose students in different areas of law and help them acquire additional legal perspectives. It is in this event that the ALSP General Assembly is organized, during which members elect officers of the National Board and Regional Boards and members of the Board of Trustees. Furthermore, it is also during this event that the general academic theme and objective is determined to harmonize the projects and programs of ALSP.
On its 28th Anniversary, we are extremely proud to offer our attending delegates a far-reaching and compelling agenda and itinerary slightly different from the previous conventions, to wit:
A. On the Agenda:
1. We assure to tailor fit discussions on account of relevance vis-à-vis the importance of the law student sector’s involvement in the legal education, the legal profession, and the society in general.
2. We also include topics beneficial to all participating delegates, i.e., how they can become partners for change in the legal industry and how they can best prepare for the Bar examinations.
3. A systematic, comprehensive and effective ALSP Leadership Training and Workshop will be incorporated therein which will be facilitated by a certified Organization Development (OD) Consultant and People Development Trainer/Facilitator/Speaker.
4. The Convention assures guest speakers of high caliber ranging from distinguished public servants and notable figures from the legal profession.
B. On the Itinerary:
1. The registration will jumpstart early morning on Day 1 to fully maximize the time and attendance of the delegates. A Holy Eucharist will take place right after.
2. Instead of having the usual welcome dinner, an ALSP Awards and Leaders’ Dinner will happen instead. The National President will spearhead the entire duration, which covers an awarding ceremony of selected officers and members of the Association.
3. A Dinner of the National Assembly will commence prior to the election. By then, all candidates will be given the opportunity to campaign before the National Assembly.
4. An early Quick Island-City Tour will take place on Day 3 to experience the irresistible beauty of Cebu at its finest.
5. Lastly, to have a smooth transfer of power and more efficient administration for AY 2017-18, a strategic planning of all incoming and outgoing officers will take place right after the convention.
The 2017 National Convention will surely provide Filipino law students remarkable experiences and the chance to build networks that should last a lifetime.
